A new study published in The Lancet Regional Health-Americas finds that hearing loss is more prevalent in rural areas than urban settings and is more common among men than women.
The study, led by NORC, a research organization at the University of Chicago, estimated that 37.9 million Americans currently experience hearing loss.
Unlike previous studies, this research delves into hearing loss rates at the county and state levels, specifically focusing on the year 2019 and considering individuals with hearing impairment in both ears. Although the study cannot pinpoint the exact reasons for this geographic discrepancy, experts in hearing loss suggest two crucial factors: the loudness of noises and the frequency of exposure to them.
