Bright Sunlight Helps Prevent Myopia in Children, New Study Finds

A new study has found that spending as little as fifteen minutes a day outside in bright sunlight could help prevent myopia in children. The study was published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). It was conducted as part of the Shanghai Time Outside to Reduce Myopia trial—a school-based cluster randomized clinical trial that followed school children in Shanghai for two years between October 2016 and December 2018. The study aimed to explore different sun exposure patterns and their association with the progression of myopia, or nearsightedness, in children. Myopia is a common condition where the eyes have trouble focusing light correctly, causing distant objects to appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. This happens because the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, myopia currently affects nearly 30 percent of the U.S. population, and its prevalence is increasing, with nearly half the population expected to be affected by 2050....
